WORKSHOP: Hand Mending with Heart
Pickup currently not available
Sun September 27th
12pm -3pm

Through creative improvisation, we’ll utilize basic mending techniques to artfully return our once-broken garments to new life.
We’ll learn about mending tools, materials, and the value of keeping something alive and in use- but we’ll also explore the emotional connections we make with our garments and the stories they connect us to. We’ll delve into the meditative aspects of handwork, the metaphors for relational repair to self and others, and the opportunities for personal expression. Together, we’ll bring these many threads together into something imperfect, yet whole.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Alexa Yurianna Anderson is a textile artist, natural dyer, and teacher working from Port Townsend, Washington. She creates place-based art informed by craft tradition. She teaches and leads workshops about natural dyes and garment mending - but her events are really about caretaking, the emotional connections we make with our garments, the stories they connect us to, the somatic aspects of handwork, and the inherent metaphors for relationship repair to self and others.
PARTICIPATION DETAILS:
Please bring with you 2-4 articles of different kinds of clothing that you love and that need repair.
If you are already a sewer or collector of textiles and you feel inspired, please bring along your own small collection of fabric scraps, particular scissors or needles you like to use, or perhaps some buttons or ribbon that you’ve been holding onto. Any odds and ends that feel special to you that might work their way into your creative garment repair are welcome.
If you are NEW to the art of sewing, worry not! We will have an assortment of needles, patches, strings, threads, and yarns to explore together. Just bring your clothing items to repair.
All ages welcome.
