About

A shop, and more than a shop too...

Working Loose is a concept shop and multidisciplinary art gallery playing at the intersection of commerce and creativity. More than just a retail destination, it's a hub of possibilities—a place where ideas flourish, connections are forged, and new ventures can take flight.

With an array of eclectic goods, immersive art shows, and engaging community events, we invite you to explore, connect, inspire, and be inspired!

At the heart of Working Loose, we embrace the timeless notion of vocation – the idea that we are each called to a kind of work for which we are particularly fitted. We aim to bring people together through community programming and to become a platform for both established and emerging artists to showcase their work with the wider community.

By being a harbinger of meaningful connections, we’re creating a vibrant gathering space where ideas are exchanged, collaborations blossom, and the spirit of community thrives.

Em Gift - Owner of Working Loose in Blue Hill,Me

ABOUT THE OWNER

With a career spanning 15 years in retail and the arts, Em Gift has honed her skills in project management, community building and business development— bridging the worlds of commerce, art and community engagement.

Em was the General Manger of Reliquary for seven years, Gravel & Gold for three, and  has been a guiding voice of many established and well loved brands and artists as a business consultant behind the scenes.

The name Working Loose was inspired by a book published in 1972 by the Friend's Service Society's "New Vocations Project,".  This project aimed to redefine traditional notions of "work" and "career," emphasizing the concept of "vocation"—the idea of engaging in meaningful work aligned with one's gifts and purpose within the community. Em has embraced this philosophy wholeheartedly, viewing her life's vocation as supporting and nurturing the people she believes in.

At Working Loose, Em channels her expertise and passion into supporting small businesses, artists, and makers. With an eye for talent and a knack for promotion, Em's vision for Working Loose extends beyond a retail establishment—it's a place where ideas are shared, collaborations are forged, and creativity thrives. Through skill sharing, community building, and artistic expression, Em seeks to make a meaningful impact, locally and beyond.
