MAYA MIEL
Occidental, CA
Maya Miel is a process-based leather worker, textile artist, and sculptor. Raised in a family of craftspeople, she has always been captivated by traditional handwork and finds great satisfaction in meticulous and often repetitive techniques that hone necessary muscle memory. Maya developed her skill set during her time studying textile arts and sculpture at California College of the Arts, and during her many years working for Scientific Art Studio, a California-based exhibit fabrication design-and-build studio that focuses on interactive installations and explorations of natural history. Her interest in functional art objects led her to delve into the old world art of cowboy boot making, and she has travelled throughout the country to study with different masters; she is honored to participate in the tradition of apprenticeship that has been built over countless generations of bootmakers. Maya works in her studio in rural Northern California.
