Ariela is an artist who has been working primarily with clay for the past fifteen years. Her work is inspired by historical forms. Humans have been producing practical and ritual objects out of clay for millennia, and all over the earth. Through this medium, she is connected to a lineage of makers who found in their immediate surroundings a humble substance that can be transformed into objects that are at once delicate and incredibly durable. She works in a simple, direct manner, hand-building pieces out of slabs and carving out of blocks of clay– a gentle, reciprocal collaboration with the material. Ariela lives and works in Portland, ME.
