Matrescence

Sigrid Coffin and her father are letter carvers under the family business Coffin & Daughters. This is one of Sigrid’s “art” carvings, not for a client, but for her own practice and BOY, it is a beautiful demonstration of her skill and talent!
Titled “matrescence” which means the act of becoming a mother, as a tribute to her ceremonial chopping off of her own braid when she was about to give birth to her child. Perhaps in preparation of not enough time to groom, perhaps less for a child to grab in their little fists, and perhaps a way to try to lighten to load?
