Hamtramck Free School is a rhizomatic educational project formed in 2013, consisting of curriculum generated by the community members who participate. Building off of Paulo Freire’s model of liberationist learning, HFS embraces a non-hierarchical organizational model, direct peer-to-peer learning, an educational content that grows organically from the needs of the community, and the notion that learning is not limited to information exchange but must include hands-on experience and something akin to the aesthetic experience of being alive in a learning environment. At the Hamtramck Free School, community members identify learning goals, collectively plan courses, and teach and learn from each other.
